Overview
Childhood’s Shadow is a multi-part anomaly quest chain in Neverness to Everness that includes the sub-quest Miles Apart. This quest involves exploring a haunted house, finding memory items, solving a light/dark world puzzle, and defeating shadow enemies. It’s one of the most commonly asked-about quests on community forums.
Prerequisites
- Complete the main story up to Chapter 2
- Reach Hunter Level 15+
- Have a combat-ready team (enemies are approximately Level 20)
Part 1: Finding the House
The quest triggers when you approach a specific house in the residential area. Look for the anomaly marker on your map — it appears as a swirling purple icon. Enter the house to begin the investigation.
Part 2: Miles Apart — Finding Memory Items
Once inside the house, you need to find all memory items scattered across the rooms. The house has two floors with multiple rooms.
First Floor Memory Items
- Teddy Bear — Located on the couch in the living room (the most commonly missed item). Look carefully at the left side of the couch near the armrest.
- Photo Frame — On the shelf in the hallway near the entrance
- Music Box — On the kitchen counter
Second Floor Memory Items
- Paint Can — In the child’s bedroom on the desk
- Storybook — Under the bed in the master bedroom
- Old Letter — In the bathroom cabinet (open the mirror)
Part 3: The Light/Dark World Puzzle
After collecting all memory items, you’ll find a switch in the living room on the first floor. This switch toggles the house between the “light world” (normal) and “dark world” (anomaly version).
How to Solve
- Use the switch to turn the world dark
- Talk to the girl sitting on the couch (she only appears in the dark world)
- Bring the Paint Can to Patty — she’s in the dark world version of the child’s bedroom
- Use the items in the dark world by interacting with the glowing spots
- Switch back to light world and check for new interactions
- Alternate between worlds until all memory items have been placed in their correct locations
The key insight is that items collected in the light world must be used in the dark world, and vice versa. If you’re stuck, try switching worlds and re-checking rooms you’ve already visited.
Part 4: Combat — Defeating the Shadow Enemies
After completing the puzzle, shadow enemies will spawn. These are approximately Level 20 and have the following characteristics:
- Element: Psyche-type (weak to Cosmos attacks)
- Mechanic: They teleport short distances — use AoE attacks
- Recommended: Bring a Cosmos DPS character like Nanally or Aurelia
The final enemy is a mini-boss with a shield phase. Break the shield by attacking the glowing weak points, then burst it down during the stagger window.
Rewards
| Reward | Amount |
|---|---|
| Annulith | 40 |
| Fons | 20,000 |
| Beetle Coins | 25,000 |
| Hunter EXP | 5,000 |
| Character Pixel (random) | 3 |
Common Issues & Solutions
Q: I can’t find the teddy bear! A: It’s on the LEFT side of the couch in the living room, partially hidden by a cushion. Rotate your camera angle to spot it.
Q: The switch doesn’t seem to do anything! A: Make sure you’ve collected ALL memory items first. The switch won’t activate the dark world until all items are found.
Q: I placed items but nothing happened! A: You need to place items in the correct world (light or dark). Try switching worlds and placing the item again.
Q: The enemies are too hard! A: They’re weak to Cosmos element. If you’re underleveled, come back at Hunter Level 20+ with upgraded gear.
