🟢 LIVE NOW — Iroi’s banner “The Lifeline” runs July 29 – August 19, 2026. This guide covers her mechanics for players who just pulled her.
Iroi is one of the more mechanically unique characters in NTE. Her kit revolves around an Imagination bar, a held basic attack that turns her into a sheep-riding missile launcher, and a skill that has completely different effects depending on whether you tap or hold it. The confusion is real — this guide breaks it all down.
The Imagination Bar
At the top of Iroi’s health bar is a secondary resource called the Imagination bar. There is a small notch on the bar marking a threshold. Two of her most important abilities require this bar to be above that threshold:
- Her Ultimate deals significantly more damage when Imagination is full.
- Her held basic attack (the sheep missile sequence) can only be activated when Imagination is above the threshold.
Normal basic attacks build Imagination gradually. The fastest way to fill it is through her held basic attack sequence itself — once you get the loop going, Imagination stays consistently high.
Basic Attacks: Tap vs. Hold
Iroi’s basic attacks work differently depending on whether you tap or hold the button.
Tap basic attack — Standard attacks that deal moderate damage and build Imagination. These are fine for building the resource but are not her primary damage source.
Hold basic attack — This is her main damage tool. When Imagination is above the threshold, holding the attack button triggers a multi-hit sequence that ends with Iroi mounting a sheep and firing a barrage of homing missiles. The key properties of this attack:
| Property | Detail |
|---|---|
| Damage ratio | Approximately 1,800% combined across all missile hits |
| Movement | Iroi can move freely while firing |
| Off-field continuation | If you swap to another character mid-sequence, Iroi continues firing off-field until she runs out of Imagination or hits the maximum shot count |
| Esper Cycle generation | The missile sequence builds her Esper Cycle meter — a full Imagination bar going in means a full Cycle meter coming out |
The off-field continuation is particularly strong in rotation-based teams. You can fire off the sequence, swap to another character to do their rotation, and Iroi keeps dealing damage in the background.
Her Skill: The Most Important Thing to Know
Iroi’s skill has two modes depending on how you press it, and confusing them is the most common mistake new players make.
| Input | Effect |
|---|---|
| Tap skill | Iroi attacks normally. This is what you want in most situations. |
| Hold skill | Triggers Regression — transforms all other party members into sheep. Do not use this in a team fight unless you intend to. |
What Is Regression?
Regression is Iroi’s solo mode. When activated by holding her skill, all teammates transform into sheep and are removed from active combat. They remain as sheep until one of the following happens:
- The battle ends.
- Iroi dies.
- Iroi uses her Ultimate (which temporarily restores one ally from Regression).
Regression exists for specific solo content or challenge scenarios. In standard team play, always tap her skill, never hold it. The game does not warn you clearly when you are about to trigger Regression, so this catches many players off guard.
Her Ultimate
Iroi’s Ultimate has two functions:
- Deals damage — The damage is significantly higher when her Imagination bar is full, so time it accordingly.
- Revives one ally from Regression — If Regression is active (teammates are sheep), her Ultimate temporarily restores one ally to normal. This is the intended recovery tool if you accidentally trigger Regression mid-fight.
Esper Ability
Iroi’s Esper Ability pulls enemies toward her, functioning as a vacuum or crowd-control tool. This is useful for grouping enemies before her missile barrage, and it synergizes with teams that benefit from enemies being clustered together.
Recommended Rotation (A0, No Signature Arc)
The following rotation is based on community-tested play from the NTE subreddit and assumes a team of Iroi, Protagonist (MC), Jiuyuan, and Nanally:
| Step | Character | Action |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Protagonist | Skill → Ultimate |
| 2 | Iroi | Tap Skill → Ultimate → Hold basic attack (sheep missiles) → swap out |
| 3 | Jiuyuan | Skill → Ultimate → swap |
| 4 | Nanally | Skill → Ultimate → basic attacks until Cycle is ready |
| 5 | Protagonist | Repeat from step 1 |
The key is to activate Iroi’s held basic attack and then swap immediately. She continues the missile sequence off-field while you cycle through the rest of the team.
Common Mistakes
Accidentally triggering Regression is the most reported issue. If your whole team suddenly turns into sheep during a boss fight, you held her skill button instead of tapping it. Use her Ultimate to restore one ally, then wait for the battle to end or Iroi to die to reset.
Not using the held basic attack is the second most common issue. Many players tap through her attacks without realizing the held version exists and does the bulk of her damage.
Using her Ultimate with low Imagination wastes a significant portion of its damage potential. Try to fill the Imagination bar with her held basic attack before using the Ultimate.
Sheep as Attack Drones (Regression Mechanic — Advanced)
When Regression is active — either from holding her skill or from teammates dying while Iroi is alive — the sheep that replace your teammates are not passive. They function as invincible attack drones whose damage scales off Iroi’s stats (Attack stat and Basic Attack/Support Skill values). The sheep take the Esper element of the character they replaced.
This means that even in Regression mode, Iroi can still trigger Esper Cycles using the sheep. When Iroi’s Esper meter is full, pressing the switch button for a “sheeped” character triggers their Esper cycle without interrupting Iroi’s own actions. This is the core of Iroi’s solo-play viability — she can maintain full team Esper cycle rotations even when playing alone.
In standard team play, you will rarely use this intentionally. But if you accidentally trigger Regression mid-fight, knowing that the sheep still deal damage and can trigger Esper cycles means the situation is recoverable without immediately losing the fight.
Blossom Esper Cycle Bonus
When Iroi is in your party, the Blossom Esper Cycle gains an additional effect. A Blossom cycle occurs when an Anima character switches to a Cosmos character (or vice versa) with a full Esper meter, spawning a Pistil — a flower-shaped projectile cluster that fires homing shots.
With Iroi in the team, each Blossom cycle spawns an additional Clone Pistil approximately 3 seconds after the original. Clone Pistils are visually pink (standard Pistils are white) and have a significantly higher fire rate:
| Pistil Type | Duration | Fire Rate | Total Shots |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Pistil | 10 seconds | 1 shot every 2 seconds | 5 shots |
| Clone Pistil (Iroi bonus) | 10 seconds | 1 shot every 0.5 seconds | ~20 shots |
Each Clone Pistil shot deals roughly one-third the damage of a standard Pistil shot, but the fire rate difference means Clone Pistils deal substantially more total damage than standard ones. Teams that already use Blossom cycles (Anima/Cosmos character pairs) benefit significantly from having Iroi in the lineup.
Quick Reference
| Mechanic | Summary |
|---|---|
| Imagination bar | Secondary resource above HP; needed for held basic and strong Ultimate |
| Tap basic | Normal attacks; builds Imagination |
| Hold basic | Sheep missile sequence; ~1,800% damage; continues off-field after swap |
| Tap skill | Heals, pulls enemies, buffs team attack, shreds enemy defense; use this in team play |
| Hold skill | Triggers Regression (team turns into sheep); avoid in team fights |
| Ultimate | Deals damage (stronger with full Imagination); temporarily revives one ally from Regression |
| Esper Ability | Pulls enemies toward Iroi; useful for grouping |
