Shinku is NTE’s first truly polarizing limited S-rank DPS. Her banner ends July 23, and the community is split on whether she is worth pulling — particularly at A0 for free-to-play players. This analysis covers her actual combat performance based on three weeks of community testing, prydwen tier list data, and boss fight observations.
The Core Issue: Consistency Against Mobile Bosses
Every previous limited S-rank DPS in NTE has one thing in common: their primary damage sources apply instantly, regardless of whether the boss is standing still or running across the arena. Shinku does not share this property.
Her damage during her 13-second Ultimate window depends on landing 10 Charge Trigger explosions — each one is a small-radius point-blank AoE centered on Shinku herself. Against a boss that stays in one area (like the Beyond the Rails Stage 12 boss), all 10 explosions hit, her DPS is excellent, and she regenerates her Ultimate meter for the next rotation.
Against a hyperactive boss like Mammon, many of those explosions miss entirely. Her DPS drops sharply, and her meter regeneration fails, breaking the rotation.
| DPS Character | Instant Damage % | Sticky Damage % | Hyperactive Boss Performance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nanally | ~35% (ult + skill) | ~11% (Blossom) | Good (46% lands regardless) |
| Hotori | ~74% (ult) | — | Excellent |
| Lacrimosa | ~39% (ult + skill) | ~25% (DOTs) | Good (64% lands regardless) |
| Chaos | ~13% (ult + skill) | ~45% (Remora nuke) | Good (58% lands regardless) |
| Shinku (A0) | Low | Low | Poor (most damage requires proximity + boss staying still) |

A0 vs A3: The Awakening Gap
Shinku’s consistency problems are partially addressed by her A3 and A4 awakenings, but not eliminated. At A0 (one copy, the standard F2P ceiling), her Charge Trigger radius and meter regeneration are at their baseline values. At A3+, the radius increases and she gains additional Charge Triggers per rotation, making it easier to land hits even on moving targets.
This creates an unusual situation: Shinku is a different character at A0 versus A3. Players who have pulled three copies generally rate her as “solid” to “good.” Players at A0 — the majority of the playerbase — frequently report disappointing performance against anything that moves.
| Awakening Level | Typical Player Type | Combat Consistency |
|---|---|---|
| A0 | F2P / Low Spender | Inconsistent, Mammon-dependent |
| A1–A2 | Moderate Spender | Marginal improvement |
| A3–A4 | Whale / Heavy Spender | Consistent, competitive with top DPS |
Team Requirements
Shinku’s optimal team is rigid: Shinku — Skia — Zero — Nanally or Iroi. Any substitution reduces the number of Charge Triggers available during her Ultimate, which directly reduces her DPS. This is in contrast to Lacrimosa and Chaos, both of whom achieve peak performance with only two dedicated teammates and have a flexible third and fourth slot.
For players without Skia or Zero, Shinku’s performance degrades further. If you are running a budget team, the gap between Shinku and a well-built Nanally or Lacrimosa narrows considerably.
Who Should Pull Shinku?
Pull if:
- You have Skia and Zero already built
- You enjoy technical, timing-based gameplay (her gaze mechanics reward patience)
- You are pulling for aesthetics or story reasons — her 999 Nights version is genuinely excellent
- You can afford A3+ (three copies)
Skip or wait if:
- You are F2P and planning to pull Iroi (banner starts July 23 — only 3 days away)
- You do not have Skia or Zero
- Your primary content is high-mobility bosses like Mammon
- You are satisfied with your current DPS (Nanally, Lacrimosa, or Chaos at A0 outperform Shinku A0 in most content)
Shinku in 999 Nights
One important caveat: the analysis above applies only to the gacha Shinku you pull from her banner. The free Shinku provided in the 999 Nights game mode is a separate character with different mechanics — no gaze system, and the board-game format ensures her AoE explosions consistently hit enemies. In 999 Nights, she is excellent and a pure delight to play.
This distinction matters for new players: you will experience the best version of Shinku for free in 999 Nights regardless of whether you pull her banner copy.
Prydwen Tier List Assessment
The prydwen team currently rates Shinku at T0.5 (just below the top tier), with their changelog noting:
“The dev changes don’t address how reliant she is on Charge, needing the boss to remain targetable throughout all of her ultimate state, her abilities severely ungrouping enemies, or the large downtime that occurs after her initial burst.”
This assessment aligns with the community consensus: Shinku is not a weak character, but her ceiling is harder to reach than previous limited DPS units, and her floor is lower at A0.
Iroi Banner Starts July 23
If you are on the fence about Shinku and have been saving for Iroi, the decision window is closing. Shinku’s banner ends July 23 and Iroi’s begins the same day. Iroi is a support character with universal buff potential, meaning she fits into multiple team archetypes and has a longer meta lifespan than most DPS units.
For players with an established main DPS, Iroi is likely the higher-value pull in Version 1.2.
