What Is the Scorch Reaction?
Scorch is a Duo Esper Cycle reaction in Neverness to Everness triggered by combining the Incantation and Chaos elements. When a character with a charged Esper Meter swaps between an Incantation and Chaos character, the Scorch reaction fires, inflicting a powerful damage-over-time (DoT) effect on the target.
Scorch is the premier sustained damage reaction in NTE’s current version. With a 15-second duration — the longest of any duo reaction — Scorch provides persistent damage that continues ticking even during character swaps, dodge animations, and reload windows. This makes it exceptionally team-friendly and the foundation for quickswap playstyles. Scorch is also one of two prerequisites for the Discord triple reaction, widely considered the strongest reaction combination in the game.
How Scorch Works: DoT Mechanics
When Scorch triggers, the target receives the Scorch debuff for 15 seconds. During this period, the target takes damage at regular intervals (approximately every 1-2 seconds). The total damage dealt over the full 15-second duration is substantial, often rivaling or exceeding the burst damage of reactions like Nova when allowed to tick for its full duration.
The DoT damage ticks are classified as Esper Cycle damage and scale with the triggering character’s ATK stat. Each tick applies independently, meaning damage bonuses, critical hits, and resistance calculations are checked per tick rather than once for the entire duration. This creates variance in total Scorch damage but also means critical hit builds can significantly amplify Scorch output.
Key mechanical details about Scorch include the following. The 15-second duration is the longest of any duo reaction, providing exceptional uptime relative to typical rotation lengths. Scorch does not stack — reapplying Scorch to a target already affected refreshes the timer and damage values but does not create multiple simultaneous DoT instances. The DoT continues ticking regardless of which character is on field, making it true “fire and forget” damage.
Scorch’s long duration is specifically designed to overlap with Nova’s 5-second window, enabling the Discord triple reaction. This is not coincidental — the Bottom Trio (Incantation, Chaos, Psyche) is built around maintaining Scorch as a persistent debuff while cycling Nova triggers for Discord activation.
Characters That Amplify Scorch
Baicang (S-Rank, Incantation)
Baicang’s passive “Power Word” enhancement adds an extra Scorch application whenever she uses her Power Word ability. This effectively doubles Scorch uptime in rotations where Baicang is the primary on-field DPS, as she can maintain Scorch through her own kit without relying solely on Esper Cycle swaps. Baicang is the cornerstone of any serious Scorch or Discord team.
Sakiri (S-Rank, Incantation)
Sakiri’s passive increases Scorch DoT damage by +25% per active DoT type on the target, stacking up to +100%. In a team that applies multiple DoT effects (Scorch itself, plus any character-specific DoTs from abilities), Sakiri’s enhancement can quadruple Scorch’s effective damage. This makes her the highest-ceiling Scorch amplifier when paired with other DoT-applying characters.
Adler (A-Rank, Incantation)
Adler’s passive adds random debuffs to Scorch-affected targets. Each Scorch tick has a chance to apply one of three debuffs: -20% ATK (reducing enemy damage output), -10% Esper Resistance (increasing all Esper Cycle damage taken), or +10% Break Efficiency (accelerating Break meter depletion). While the randomness reduces consistency, the potential for Esper Resistance reduction makes Adler valuable in teams that rely heavily on Esper Cycle damage.
Optimal Scorch Team Compositions
Maximum Scorch DoT: Baicang + Sakiri + Daffodill + Adler
This composition stacks all three Scorch amplifiers for maximum DoT output. Baicang provides extra Scorch applications through Power Word. Sakiri multiplies DoT damage based on active DoT count. Adler adds random debuffs to Scorch ticks. Daffodill (Chaos) provides the second element for triggering Scorch and contributes to Discord setup.
Rotation: Baicang (Incantation) opens with Skills to apply initial damage → swap to Daffodill (Chaos) for Scorch trigger → Daffodill builds meter → swap back to Baicang for Power Word Scorch refresh → repeat. Scorch ticks continuously throughout the entire rotation.
Scorch into Discord: Baicang + Daffodill + Fadia + Adler
The standard Discord team uses Scorch as the foundation. Baicang and Daffodill establish Scorch (Incantation + Chaos). Then Daffodill and Fadia (Psyche) trigger Nova. With both active, Discord fires. Adler amplifies Scorch from the bench while Fadia amplifies Nova. This creates a team that excels at both sustained DoT damage and Break meter depletion.
Budget Scorch Team: Adler + Daffodill + Psyche Support + Healer
For players without Baicang or Sakiri, Adler (A-Rank) provides accessible Incantation coverage with Scorch amplification. Daffodill remains essential as the Chaos element provider. A Psyche character enables Nova for Discord potential. The healer ensures survivability during the sustained-damage playstyle.
Quickswap Scorch: Baicang + Daffodill + Sakiri + Lacrimosa
This advanced composition maximizes Scorch uptime through rapid character cycling. Baicang and Sakiri both provide Incantation element, while Daffodill and Lacrimosa both provide Chaos. This redundancy means you always have a charged meter available for Scorch triggers, maintaining near-100% DoT uptime. Lacrimosa’s Discord amplifier adds bonus damage when Discord is active.
Scorch and the Discord Triple Reaction
Scorch is the primary enabler for the Discord triple reaction. Discord triggers when a target is simultaneously affected by both Scorch (Incantation + Chaos) and Nova (Chaos + Psyche). Because Scorch lasts 15 seconds while Nova lasts only 5 seconds, Scorch serves as the “anchor” debuff that you maintain continuously while cycling Nova triggers on top of it.
The optimal Discord rotation leverages Scorch’s long duration as follows. Trigger Scorch first — this starts the 15-second timer. You now have 10 seconds to trigger Nova before Scorch expires. Once Nova is applied (5-second duration), Discord activates for the overlap window. When Nova detonates at the 5-second mark, Discord ends. You then retrigger Nova (if meter allows) while Scorch is still active to restart Discord.
In a well-executed Discord rotation, Scorch is triggered once every 15 seconds while Nova is triggered 2-3 times within each Scorch window. This maintains Discord for approximately 10-15 seconds out of every 15-second cycle — exceptional uptime for such a powerful effect.
Scorch Damage Formula
Scorch DoT damage per tick is calculated as:
Tick DMG = Base DoT Multiplier × Triggering Character ATK × (1 + Esper Cycle DMG Bonus) × (1 + Sakiri Bonus) × DEF Multiplier × RES Multiplier
Where Sakiri Bonus = 0.25 × (number of active DoT types on target), capping at 1.0 (100% bonus with 4 DoT types).
Total Scorch damage over 15 seconds equals approximately 8-10 ticks × Tick DMG, depending on tick rate. With Sakiri’s full amplification, total Scorch damage can exceed many characters’ Ultimate damage, making it one of the highest-value reactions per trigger in sustained fights.
Scorch vs Other Sustained Damage Options
Scorch’s 15-second duration makes it uniquely suited for teams that prioritize rotation flexibility over burst timing. Unlike Nova (which requires precise 5-second timing) or Hexed (which rewards front-loaded damage), Scorch simply requires triggering once and then benefits your team passively for 15 seconds regardless of what you do during that window.
This “set and forget” nature makes Scorch the most beginner-friendly damage reaction. New players who struggle with tight rotation timing can trigger Scorch and then focus on survival and basic attacks without losing significant damage output. As players improve, they layer Nova on top for Discord, but Scorch alone provides meaningful damage contribution.
Compared to Blossom (the other sustained damage reaction), Scorch is single-target focused while Blossom excels in AoE scenarios. In boss fights with a single tough target, Scorch typically outperforms Blossom in total damage. In wave content with multiple enemies, Blossom’s Vita Pistil AoE provides better total damage across all targets.
Advanced Scorch Mechanics
DoT Snapshotting
Scorch’s damage values are determined at the moment of trigger and remain fixed for the entire 15-second duration. This means buffs active when you trigger Scorch affect all subsequent ticks, but buffs applied after the trigger do not. Optimize by ensuring all ATK buffs and damage bonuses are active before triggering Scorch, then freely swap to other activities knowing the DoT is locked at maximum value.
Scorch and Break Interaction
Scorch ticks continue during enemy Break states, benefiting from the increased damage taken multiplier. If you can time your Scorch trigger just before an enemy enters Break, the remaining ticks during Break deal significantly more damage than normal. This synergizes naturally with Discord teams, which deplete Break meters rapidly.
Refresh vs Expiry
Refreshing Scorch (triggering again while active) resets the 15-second timer with new damage values based on current stats. If your ATK has increased since the original trigger (from buffs, Haniel’s Nova steal, etc.), refreshing mid-duration can increase total damage. If your stats are unchanged, refreshing before expiry wastes remaining ticks — wait for natural expiry then retrigger.
Tips for Maximizing Scorch
Trigger Scorch at the start of every rotation. Its 15-second duration covers most full rotation cycles, providing passive damage throughout.
Stack Scorch amplifiers for multiplicative gains. Running Baicang + Sakiri + Adler together creates compounding bonuses that far exceed any single amplifier’s contribution.
Snapshot buffs before triggering. Activate all ATK buffs and damage bonuses before the Scorch trigger to lock in maximum tick damage for the full duration.
Use Scorch as your Discord anchor. In Discord teams, maintain Scorch at all times and cycle Nova triggers on top. Never let Scorch expire in a Discord rotation.
Build Cycle Rate on your Incantation/Chaos characters. Faster meter generation means more frequent Scorch triggers and better uptime, especially important for maintaining Discord overlap windows.
Pair with Break-focused strategies. Scorch’s persistent ticks benefit enormously from Break state damage amplification. Teams that can rapidly Break enemies (like Discord teams) naturally amplify Scorch’s total damage.
