What Is the Discord Reaction?
Discord is one of two Triple Esper Cycle reactions in Neverness to Everness, triggered by the Bottom Trio elements: Incantation, Chaos, and Psyche. Discord requires both prerequisite Duo reactions — Scorch (Incantation + Chaos) and Nova (Chaos + Psyche) — to be active on the target simultaneously. When this condition is met, Discord fires automatically, rapidly depleting the enemy’s Break meter.
Discord is widely considered the strongest reaction in the version 1.0 meta. It simultaneously provides massive damage through Nova’s detonation, sustained DoT through Scorch, and accelerated Break through the Discord effect itself. This triple benefit makes Discord teams the fastest at clearing challenging content, particularly bosses with large Break meters that gate their vulnerability phases.
How Discord Works: Break Meter Depletion
When Discord activates, the affected target’s Break meter is continuously depleted at an accelerated rate. The Break meter (also called Stagger gauge) is the bar that, when fully depleted, causes enemies to enter a vulnerable Break state where they take significantly increased damage and cannot attack.
Discord’s Break depletion occurs passively — it does not require the player to actively attack the target. As long as both Scorch and Nova debuffs remain active simultaneously, the Break meter drains continuously. This passive depletion stacks with active Break damage from attacks, meaning Discord teams deplete Break meters far faster than any other composition.
The practical impact is transformative. Bosses that normally require 30-60 seconds of sustained attacking to Break can be Broken in 10-15 seconds with Discord active. This creates more frequent vulnerability windows, which in turn means more total damage dealt over the course of a fight. Discord teams effectively “compress” fight timelines by accelerating the Break cycle.
Trigger Conditions: Scorch + Nova Overlap
Discord requires simultaneous presence of both Scorch and Nova on the target. Understanding the timing is critical:
Scorch lasts 15 seconds — this is your anchor debuff that you maintain continuously. Nova lasts 5 seconds — this is your cycling debuff that you reapply within each Scorch window.
The optimal trigger sequence:
- Trigger Scorch (Incantation + Chaos swap) — starts 15-second timer
- Within the next 10 seconds, trigger Nova (Chaos + Psyche swap) — starts 5-second timer
- Discord activates immediately because both debuffs are now present
- Discord remains active for up to 5 seconds (until Nova detonates)
- Retrigger Nova before Scorch expires to restart Discord
- When Scorch expires, retrigger Scorch and repeat the cycle
In a well-executed rotation, Discord is active for approximately 10-15 seconds out of every 15-second Scorch cycle — exceptional uptime for such a powerful effect.
Characters That Amplify Discord
Lacrimosa (S-Rank, Chaos)
Lacrimosa’s passive “Tomato Banquet” deals additional damage equal to 400% of her ATK when Discord triggers on a target that is already in a Broken state. This creates a devastating combo: Discord depletes the Break meter → target enters Break → Discord continues firing during Break → Lacrimosa’s passive adds 400% ATK bonus damage on each Discord trigger during Break. The result is an explosion of damage during Break windows that far exceeds what other teams can achieve.
Daffodill (S-Rank, Chaos)
Daffodill’s passive “Blade Draw” reduces the target’s Break cap by 10% for 30 seconds when Discord is active, stacking up to -20% (two applications). This means the Break meter’s maximum value is permanently reduced while Daffodill is on the team, making subsequent Breaks progressively easier to achieve. In extended fights, this compounding reduction means later Breaks happen significantly faster than the first — creating an accelerating cycle of vulnerability windows.
Optimal Discord Team Compositions
Meta Discord Team: Baicang + Daffodill + Fadia + Lacrimosa
This is the strongest overall team composition in version 1.0. Baicang (Incantation) amplifies Scorch and provides massive personal DPS. Daffodill (Chaos) enables both Scorch and Nova triggers while reducing Break cap. Fadia (Psyche) enables Nova triggers and amplifies Nova’s detonation with HP drain. Lacrimosa (Chaos) amplifies Discord with 400% ATK bonus during Break.
Rotation: Baicang opens with Skills → swap to Daffodill for Scorch trigger → Daffodill builds meter → swap to Fadia for Nova trigger → Discord activates → during Discord, swap back to Baicang for DPS → retrigger Nova before Scorch expires → when Scorch expires, retrigger from Baicang → repeat.
Discord + Scorch Focus: Baicang + Sakiri + Daffodill + Haniel
This variant maximizes Scorch DoT damage alongside Discord. Sakiri’s passive (+25% DoT per active DoT type) dramatically increases Scorch tick damage. Baicang adds extra Scorch applications. Haniel provides Psyche for Nova triggers and adds ATK steal to Nova detonations. Daffodill enables Chaos element and Break cap reduction.
Budget Discord Team: Adler + Daffodill + Haniel + Flex
For players without Baicang, Fadia, or Lacrimosa, Adler (A-Rank Incantation) provides Scorch triggers with random debuff amplification. Daffodill remains essential as the Chaos pivot. Haniel (A-Rank Psyche) enables Nova triggers. The flex slot can be a healer or a second Chaos/Incantation character for rotation flexibility.
Speed Break Discord: Daffodill + Lacrimosa + Baicang + Fadia
This composition prioritizes Break speed above all else. Daffodill’s Break cap reduction + Discord’s passive Break depletion + Lacrimosa’s Break-state bonus damage creates the fastest Break chain in the game. Use this team for content where rapid Breaking is the win condition (certain weekly bosses, timed challenges with Break-gated phases).
Why Discord Dominates the Meta
Discord’s meta dominance stems from its unique combination of three benefits in one reaction:
Benefit 1: Accelerated Break. Discord depletes Break meters passively, creating more frequent vulnerability windows. More Break windows = more total damage dealt over a fight’s duration.
Benefit 2: Break-State Synergy. Lacrimosa’s passive deals massive bonus damage during Break, and Discord continues firing during Break states. This creates a feedback loop where Discord causes Break, then deals bonus damage during Break.
Benefit 3: Sustained + Burst Damage. Scorch provides 15 seconds of DoT (sustained), Nova provides a 5-second delayed burst (burst), and Discord adds passive Break damage (sustained). The team deals damage through three simultaneous channels.
No other reaction combination provides this triple benefit. Charge teams generate Ultimate Energy (powerful but single-purpose). Blossom teams provide AoE damage (strong but lacks Break acceleration). Discord teams do everything — damage, Break, and utility — simultaneously.
Discord Damage and Break Formula
Discord’s Break depletion rate is calculated as a percentage of the target’s maximum Break meter per second. The exact rate depends on the triggering character’s Break Efficiency stat and any applicable amplifiers (like Daffodill’s Break cap reduction).
Effective Break Rate = Base Discord Rate × (1 + Break Efficiency Bonus) × (1 / (1 - Daffodill Cap Reduction))
With Daffodill’s full -20% Break cap reduction, the effective Break meter is only 80% of its original value. Combined with Discord’s passive depletion and active attack Break damage, total Break speed can be 3-4x faster than non-Discord teams.
Lacrimosa’s bonus damage during Break: Bonus DMG = 400% × Lacrimosa ATK × (1 + Esper Cycle DMG Bonus) × DEF Multiplier × RES Multiplier
This fires on each Discord trigger during Break state, which occurs continuously as long as both Scorch and Nova remain active. In practice, this adds several hundred thousand damage per Break window.
Advanced Discord Mechanics
Scorch Refresh During Discord
You can refresh Scorch (retrigger Incantation + Chaos swap) while Discord is active without disrupting the triple reaction. As long as Nova remains active, refreshing Scorch simply extends the anchor debuff’s timer. This is important for maintaining Discord across multiple Nova cycles within a single extended Scorch window.
Nova Cycling for Extended Discord
The key to maximizing Discord uptime is cycling Nova triggers within each Scorch window. After the first Nova detonates (5 seconds), immediately retrigger Nova to restart Discord. With fast meter generation (Parry or high Cycle Rate), you can maintain 2-3 Nova cycles per Scorch window, keeping Discord active for 10-15 seconds out of every 15-second cycle.
Discord and Enemy Immunity Phases
Some bosses have immunity phases where they cannot be Broken or take reduced Break damage. Discord’s Break depletion is reduced (but not eliminated) during these phases. Plan your rotation to have Discord active during vulnerable phases rather than immunity phases for maximum Break efficiency.
Stacking Discord with Active Break Attacks
Discord’s passive Break depletion stacks additively with Break damage from active attacks. Characters with high Break Efficiency stats (like Daffodill) deal additional Break damage on top of Discord’s passive depletion. This stacking means Discord teams should still actively attack during Discord windows rather than relying solely on passive depletion.
Discord in Different Content Types
Weekly Bosses
Discord is the undisputed best reaction for weekly bosses, which have massive Break meters and extended fight durations. The accelerated Break cycle creates multiple vulnerability windows per fight, and Lacrimosa’s Break-state bonus damage compounds over each successive Break.
Anomaly Commissions (Hard/Extreme)
High-difficulty Anomaly Commissions feature elite enemies with substantial Break meters. Discord teams can Break these elites in seconds rather than the 30+ seconds required by other compositions, dramatically reducing clear times.
Timed Challenges
Discord’s Break acceleration is particularly valuable in timed content where DPS checks are tight. Faster Breaks mean more vulnerability windows within the time limit, translating to more total damage dealt before the timer expires.
Multi-Target Content
Discord applies to a single target, making it less efficient in pure AoE scenarios. However, in content with a single priority target (boss + adds), Discord can be focused on the boss while AoE from Scorch DoT and character abilities handles smaller enemies.
Tips for Maximizing Discord
Always trigger Scorch before Nova. Scorch’s 15-second duration is your anchor. Nova’s 5-second duration is your cycling trigger. Reversing the order wastes Scorch’s long duration.
Retrigger Nova as soon as it detonates. The faster you reapply Nova after detonation, the higher your Discord uptime percentage. Use Parry or high-Cycle-Rate Skills to fill meters quickly between Nova triggers.
Run both Daffodill and Lacrimosa for maximum Discord value. Daffodill’s Break cap reduction makes Breaks easier, and Lacrimosa’s bonus damage makes Breaks more rewarding. Together, they create the fastest and most damaging Break cycle in the game.
Build Break Efficiency on your Chaos characters. This stat directly increases Discord’s Break depletion rate, accelerating the time to each Break window.
Time your burst for Break windows. Discord creates frequent Breaks — save your highest-damage abilities (Ultimates, buffed Skills) for these windows where the target takes increased damage.
Maintain Scorch uptime above all else. If Scorch expires, Discord immediately ends regardless of Nova’s remaining duration. Retrigger Scorch proactively before it expires to maintain continuous Discord.
