Puff Lore Story Characters Anomaly

Puff is one of the most memorable characters in Neverness to Everness — not because he is a playable S-Rank, but because his story delivers one of the game’s most emotionally resonant moments. Despite his brief appearance, the community consistently ranks him among NTE’s best-written characters.

Who Is Puff?

Puff is an Anomaly encountered during the main story in Hethereau. His appearance is that of a sentient snowman: a round body, a hat resembling an ice cream cone, a red-and-white striped scarf, and cherries on each hand. He consumes ice cream to generate and release cold air.

Unlike the hostile Anomalies that Appraisers typically hunt, Puff is friendly, talkative, and self-aware. He has a clear purpose: to perform a miracle.

Puff’s Story

Puff’s motivations center on a friend who has fallen into a coma. He believes that performing a miracle — specifically, making it snow during the height of summer in Hethereau — will somehow help his friend wake up. The exact nature of this belief is left deliberately vague, which makes it more affecting rather than less.

Throughout his Arc, Puff enlists the help of Zero and the Appraiser to collect enough cold air to make his miracle possible. The journey takes them across the city: helping at a noodle shop, finding high ground, and gathering the energy Puff needs.

The conclusion is the defining moment of his character. Puff knows that when an Anomaly fulfills its purpose, it is nullified — it ceases to exist. He proceeds anyway. The snow falls over Hethereau, and Puff disappears.

Zero keeps the last photograph taken of Puff.

Why the Community Loves Puff

Puff’s popularity within the NTE community comes from the contrast between his cheerful, comedic exterior and the weight of his story. He is introduced as a silly snowman who likes taking selfies and whose “ass is durian flavor” (his words). By the end of his Arc, he has become one of the game’s most sincere examples of selfless sacrifice.

Several community discussions have drawn parallels between Puff and classic fictional archetypes of sacrifice — characters who give everything for others with full knowledge of the cost, and who do so without hesitation or resentment.

The fact that his miracle is never confirmed to have worked — his friend’s fate is not resolved within his Arc — makes his sacrifice feel more human and more tragic.

Puff and the Broader NTE Lore

Puff’s story also functions as an early illustration of how Anomalies work in NTE’s world. Anomalies are not simply monsters to be hunted — they are entities with their own purposes, histories, and sometimes, their own forms of love. Puff’s Arc establishes this nuance early in the game, which sets the tone for how the Appraiser approaches Anomalies throughout the main story.

His story also deepens Zero’s character. Zero, who is often portrayed as composed and professional, is visibly affected by Puff’s end. The detail of Zero keeping Puff’s photograph is a small but deliberate piece of characterization that the game does not over-explain.
